Time is the one thing that cannot be replaced.  Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.  Take advantage of the time you have while your kids are still kids.  Just like scheduling work or household chores, take time to plan time for your family to have fun together.  Maybe plan a monthly event – a trip to a park or the beach, game night, a cooking night where you teach your kids the basics of the kitchen and let them get creative.  From personal experience, it’s the family events that become tradition that kids look the most forward to and remember for a lifetime.

Fourth, provide your children with an enjoyable family home environment where they always feel safe. Family is a place where kids can share and create and not be judged. Unconditional love and acceptance is key in development and building a solid foundation for kids. Make home life fun and memorable. Creating memories can be done as both a family unit as well as time individually, one-on-one. It will all make a difference both short and long term and will create relationships that will be important for future successes as well as guidelines for future generations.

Healthy self-esteem comes from being successful – at least in one, or more, areas of life.  The key is finding where talents lie.  If it’s not obvious and recognized in school or a traditional sports or extracurricular program, it may be overlooked.

Encourage your child to explore individual interests. Once they are identified, support it and assist in talent development.

Take the time and effort to explore different interests – find that talent that may be hidden.  Encourage your kids to always try their best – regardless of success.  Stay involved in school assignments, homework and pay attention to what is easy and what is difficult for them.  Identify strengths and areas of challenge.  Listen and help them develop their interests.  Expose them to a variety of environments where they can learn about different cultures, arts and appreciate the importance of giving back through community service.  Another idea is once a talent or interest is identified, find a mentor program to foster that interest.

As a parent, it is important work to build your children’s self-esteem. Even as infants, positive affirmation is key – knowing that they are capable of age-appropriate tasks and you believe in them is of utmost importance.  This is done through praise and positive feedback, expressing confidence in them and openly recognizing their potential.  It’s not a competition – your children are individuals with unique gifts and challenges.  Do not compare them with other siblings, friends or even your own childhood.

Realistic encouragement and affirmation is healthy.  However, expecting too much or giving false confidence only leads to frustration, potential failures and lower self-esteem later in life – the exact opposite of what you are trying to achieve!

The input you give your children is the blueprint from which they operate and see themselves.  And self-esteem is key to growth, exploring and achieving untapped potential.

Your voice is the first building block of their blueprint.  Make it positive and strong enough to support a lifetime of challenges.

SMART:
Specific
Measurable
Accountable
Realistic
Timeframe

Here’s how I used SMART goal setting that helped me lose some weight.  A goal needs to be as specific as possible so you can work toward it and achieve it. “Lose weight” as a goal was vague and easily ignored without details.. I needed to answer specifics – why lose the weight, how much, when and how soon.

With extra weight I was tired, unhappy and nothing fit! I wanted to feel good again and wear some of my favorite clothes! Now this is getting specific….

I tracked my daily intake and exercise by using MyFitnessPal.com – an online food and exercise journal that kept me accountable and watching my progress as I continued. It was measurable and gave me easy access to calorie counts, etc.   I also made sure my goal was realistic.  Too much or too soon only would lead to failure and disappointment.  Progress had to keep being made, but it had to happen slow enough to make it lasting.  I get discouraged easily  and losing weight has become increasingly harder over the years.  This is also why I enlisted a friend with a similar goal.  He kept me accountable and is an encouraging force to keep me moving in the right direction.
I gave myself a timeframe to hit specific milestones as well as a final number date.
Once I got going on losing the weight and making some mini-goal dates, it got easier to keep going to my ultimate goal weight.

The changes were in diet and lifestyle.  They became a way of life and not just a diet.  That’s the real goal – to be happy, healthy and wear all my favorite clothing again!  Be SMART for 2015!

Each month we pick a topic to discuss at our karate studio.  The month of November we discuss Gratitude in observance of Thanksgiving and what that really means.  We call it “The Attitude of Gratitude.”

When I stopped to think about what Gratitude means to me personally, all I had to do was look around me.  Our dojo is something I am very proud of.  Yes, it is a job – a business we own.  But it is more than a mechanism for making money.  I watched the classes and the interaction of instructors with students and also with parents.  The Boca Raton Karate & Kickboxing Academy is a place everyone can come and feel comfortable and safe and be themselves.  There’s no judgment – instead you receive support, encouragement and understanding.  Our instructors, students and their families are among the nicest group of people I’ve ever met.  Once your enter the door, you are part of a family – a dojo family – my family.

Kids really do feel safe.  They learn the martial arts with no fear of embarrassment or being bullied.  They exercise and interact with respect to instructors, but more importantly, to one another.

Adults have fun.  And they are TOUGH.  Even our beginners are amazing with their dedication to fitness and good health.  And the support they give one another keep them coming back for more.

So to wrap this up, my gratitude is for the Boca Raton Karate & Kickboxing Academy.  It is lots of people’s “home away from home,” a place to escape, burn off the stress, have fun and learn valuable self-defense.  I’m grateful to be part of it and very proud of the role we now play in the community.

I give thanks to all of you who have helped build BRKKA to what it is today.
